A few days ago, I wrote about how gift cards to trigger the new $200 Hilton annual credit on the American Express Business Platinum card.
I decided to try my luck and see if buying a Hilton gift card would also trigger the $240 Hilton annual credit on the Amex Hilton Honors Business card (which is a $60 per quarter credit) — and I’m happy to report that it does!
Here’s how to buy a Hilton gift card to trigger the credit:
- Visit https://www.buyhiltongiftcards.com/ to purchase the gift card.
- In terms of which gift card to get, I selected a “personal” gift card — while I’m not sure if a “business” gift card would also work, I would assume it does.
- You can only buy gift cards in $25 increments, so I purchased a $50 gift card and a $25 gift card in the same transaction (this is important as you’re charged $1.95 to get the gift cards mailed to you, so buying two at once means you only pay $1.95 for both — if you purchase the gift cards in two separate transactions, you’d pay $3.90).
- Wait a few days for the credit to post (I made the purchase on December 24th and the credit posted on December 26th).
Since you can only buy Hilton gift cards in $25 denominations, you’ll end up spending $76.95 and receive a credit back of $60, meaning you’ll pay $16.95 for $75 worth of credits. While not ideal, you’re essentially getting $58.05 in Hilton gift cards for “free,” which is better than letting the credit expire if you don’t have any Hilton stays planned that quarter.
The only thing I’m bummed about is that I didn’t try this earlier, as I definitely let more than few quarters pass without using this credit.
A word of caution: just because the gift card triggered the $60 credit for me today doesn’t mean it will for you or forever — so, in other words, your mileage may vary. With that, if you’re purchasing a Hilton gift card using your Amex Hilton Honors Business card, just keep in mind that the worst-case scenario is that you’ll be stuck with a $60 gift card that you won’t be reimbursed for.
