I’m a new Chase Sapphire Reserve cardholder and discovered a few weeks ago that I was only earning 4 points for every $1 spent on Lyft, even though I should have been earning 5 points.

When I called Chase a few weeks ago to let them know about the problem, they tried to convince me that the reason it was only showing as 4x points for Lyft is because the Chase Sapphire Reserve is set up so you earn 4 bonus points + 1 regular point for all spend on Lyft, but this rationale didn’t make any sense to me as I also have the Chase Sapphire Reserve for Business (also 4 bonus points + 1 regular point) and Chase Sapphire Preferred (3 bonus points + 2 regular points) cards, and each always show the 5x point total for Lyft spend in the Chase app.

It was only after I had the Chase representative look at how Lyft points showed up on my other Chase cards that he agreed to open a ticket and try to get this resolved, saying I would get a message from Chase with a resolution.
Flash-forward to a few weeks later and I didn’t receive any communication from Chase and my app still showed that I was only earning 4x points on Lyft rides, so I decided to call Chase again today. I had to do the same song-and-dance, pushing back on the narrative that even though it’s showing 4x points, I am actually earning 5x points. The representative even tried to say the reason it was showing up as 4x points was because my statement hadn’t closed yet, so I had to point her to my Chase Sapphire Preferred card that showed Lyft rides earning 5x points even though the statement also hadn’t closed yet. I kept getting put on hold, but about 35 minutes into the call, the representative acknowledged what I already knew — I was only earning 4x points on my Lyft spend and should have been earning 5x.
The representative credited me for the points that I should have earned but didn’t, and when I asked if this would be fixed moving forward she said it was my responsibility to keep an eye on my account and that I might need to keep calling to get the points credited correctly to my account, which is pretty frustrating for a $795 card, especially since each call took at least 30 minutes.
While it’s entirely possible I’m the only person in the world who is earning the wrong amount of points for Lyft rides on my Chase Sapphire Reserve card, I think it’s unlikely. With that, I recommend reviewing how many points you’re earning for Lyft on your Chase Sapphire Reserve card in your app and if you’re only seeing 4 points calling Chase. Note that if you do call Chase, it’s helpful if you have other Chase cards with Lyft spend showing up as 5x points (otherwise they’ll try to convince you that it’s actually accurately showing 4x points, when it’s not correct).
Since I spent nearly 1.5 hours on both calls and was told the problem may not be fixed and that I need to monitor it and possibly keep calling in, I asked for some extra points to be added to my account to make up for hassle. The representative I was already speaking to said she was a supervisor and that Chase had no ability to give out points like that, which I knew from experience wasn’t true. So I asked to be connected to a different supervisor, and that one nearly immediately offered me 2,000 points to help make up for the headache — not an amazing win, but I was glad they offered me something as I don’t think anyone should have to spend ~1.5 hours on the phone just to get the points they’re entitled to awarded, especially on a card with a $795 annual fee.
Bottom line
Check your Chase Sapphire Reserve card to ensure your Lyft spend is showing 5x points earned and not 4x. Also, please let me know in the comments if your Lyft spend is only showing up as 4x points as I’d love to see if this is a widespread issue.
